Research Facilities

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is located in a modern research and teaching facility, Hughes Laboratories. In addition to classrooms, laboratories, and stockrooms, the building also houses the Brill Science Library, the Miami University Instrumentation Laboratory, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. This central location is a major convenience to the students and faculty of the department.

The department is well equipped with modern instrumentation to support its research and teaching programs. Major efforts are constantly underway to expand and improve these faculties. Acquisitions include 500MHz Solid State and 500MHz Solution NMR Spectrometers, 200 MHz and 300 MHz multinuclear Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS systems, a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTMS), and a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometer. Recently, an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer and an atomic force microscope have been added. The department also houses atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma, thermal analyzers, luminescence, UV-visible photodiode array, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy instruments. Electrochemical equipment includes three computer-interface potentiostats and power supplies for preparative electrolysis. Biochemical instrumentation includes all the instrumentation necessary to perform a wide range of modern molecular and biochemical techniques, including a wide assortment of incubators, centrifuges, and electrophoresis instruments. A wide variety of chromatographs is available, representing recent advances in high-performance liquid and gas chromatography.
